Faiz, Damaan and Jalib - The redemptive voices of Pakistan

in
Saturday, 18 Feb 2012 4:00pm to 9:00pm

Pakistan today dominates the news cycle of the frontline states against 'war on terrorism' but it is a country strangely bereft of con... text - even history. We learn about the alarming radicalisation of its population and civilian and military elites, of the menacing march of extremism towards its cities and villages and of its own military's campaign against those forces.

What is missed in this marrative is the broad masses' perspective on the social reality: their continuous, unceasing, uncompromising, struggle for a more just, fair and more prosperous future for themselves and the coming generations. What is particularly ignored is their resistance during the barren and suffocating decades of military rule.

The Faiz Cultural Foundation aims to restore continuity to our history and make it whole extending into the future, projecting it, in particular, through the idiom of those who used their art to protest and resist and inspire.

As part of this mission we are organising an event to elebrate three legendary voices that have dominated our social scene as our collective conscience and have now been appropriated as guides in our endeavour towards a renaissance. You will hear their poetry, and leading intellectuals and artists will be paying their tributes to the lives of Faiz, Damaan and Jalib.

Keynote speakers: Prof Amin Mughal, Aitzaz Ahsan, Mujahid Barelvi and others.

Music performance: Laal Band, Radhika Chopra and others.

Admission: £15
